42nd President of the United States of America, William Jefferson Clinton, was the guest of honour at the Business & Finance Outstanding Contribution to Ireland Awards, where the Chamber received an award of special recognition for the role played in creating a peer community to anchor the 600 US companies in Ireland that employ 100,000 people.
Also honoured was Loretta Brennan Glucksman and the American Ireland fund, for their tremendous contribution to Ireland, particular in Education, through decades of inspired philanthropic work.
The award was accepted on the night by Chamber President Lionel Alexander who spoke of the Chamber's pride at representing such a prestigious business community and outlined hopes for the future. The key note address was delivered by President Clinton.
The past few months has seen the Chamber being particularly active in the media, resulting widespread coverage both here and abroad. The Chamber has been using the members' voice to promote policy in areas such as Education; Tax; Innovation and Ireland's international reputation.
The Chamber has continued to work with key Government policy makers, agencies and all stakeholders to ensure that the business environment remains as attractive as possible to US investment here. This has included an approach to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Innovation to call for a direct flight link between Ireland and California; a letter to the Minister for Transport on issues affecting the North West Region; and most crucially securing assurances from the Minister for Finance in international media on the status of Ireland's Corporation Tax rate.
